From my previous posts it may have become obvious that I'm a bit of an OCD freak - we're talking female version of Monk here!;-) So keeping my toothbrush germ-free is absolutely a no-brainer! Researches at England's University of Manchester have found that just one toothbrush can harbor more than one million (!) bacteria (including E.coli!) On top of that, most of us have small bathrooms and keep toothbrushes in the same room with toilets. According to WebMD, "every toilet flush sends a spray of bacteria into the air" and... they land onto our brushes! Even MORE than that: have you heard the saying - "if you can smell it, it's IN the air surrounding you"? See where I'm going with it?;-)) We HAVE to sanitize our brushes! And that's why I thought I'd share with you a DIY solution I came up with to keep my toothbrush bacteria-free. It's absolutely easy to make and you probably already have all the ingredients you need;-)
WHAT I USE:
--2 tsp Baking Soda
--1 tsp Rubbing Alcohol - it's great for killing germs, however I'm only using a little bit of it, because I don't want to spray alcohol around too much.
--1 tsp Rubbing Alcohol - it's great for killing germs, however I'm only using a little bit of it, because I don't want to spray alcohol around too much.
--1/2 cups Water
--20 drops Antimicrobial Essential Oil - again, the most potent antimicrobial oils are clove, cinnamon, bay and thyme. (according
to the study 'Letters in Applied Microbilology')
--Spray Bottle
--Spray Bottle
WHAT I DO:
I first dissolve baking soda in water very nicely to make sure there are no visible soda particles. I then add alcohol and essential oil, shake the bottle very well and that IS IT!
I spray the sanitizer onto the brush bristles after each use, and just leave it until next use. The next time, before applying tooth paste/ powder onto the brush, I rinse it first to wash away the solution. Simple as that! And on the picture you can see that I store my spray together with the brush in the holder. And I keep my tooth powder balls in that cute blue container with butterfly on top;-))))

Awesome idea! You have reminded me of the movie The Ice Storm, when the kid talks about molecules and how we are actually eating everything we smell. I never forgot that! ;) And that toilet spray thing always creeps me out!
ReplyDeleteEating?!!! OMG!!! That definitely creeped me out as well! Yeah and the toilet thing - after reading that WebMD post I know only brush my teeth in the kitchen... hoping to cope with that toilet flush fear some day:-(

Great idea! I am wondering if I could do something similar to spray on my clarisonic face brush. I have to leave it out to dry, because if I put it in a drawer I feel like it smells weird (or am I doing that all wrong?)
ReplyDeleteI think it's an AMAZING idea to spray something like that rinse onto your clarisonic brush! Water grows mold, add to that all the dead skin and bacteria that you brush off of you face with clarisonic - it can turn into a home for some really nasty stuff:-( I would definitely rinse it with something antibacterial....
DeleteI never thought of doing this but it's such a great idea! The ingredients are so simple too, thanks for sharing ♥

Observation on the Toilet flush spray issue......put the lid back down BEFORE you flush.....not an ideal solution, but definitely would help control any flying micro particles of toilet water!!
ReplyDeleteThat should definitely help! Thank you, BeBe;-)))
DeleteHi. What do you think of using hydrogen peroxide instead of rubbing alcohol in the mix? Just curious -- it's what I have in the house at the moment. :)
ReplyDeletedebunked! You will have fecal coliform on your toothbrush whether or not it is near or toilet, and its not dangerous in such a small amount. http://www.discovery.com/tv-shows/mythbusters/videos/surprise-toothbrush-minimyth.htm
ReplyDeleteThank you for the recipe. Just from my own naive curiosity, what is the Baking Soda ingredient for in this solution?
ReplyDeleteI usually dunk my toothbrush once a week in hydrogen peroxide solution, you can see it working. Then I rinse off to use.
ReplyDeleteCould I use vodka in place of the alcohol?
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of using the spray to clean the brushes.
