DIY Gingerbread House Bubble Bars Recipe. Homemade Gift Idea for Christmas

Gingerbread house bubble bars are by far my most favorite, but they cost close to $7 each AND they're only sold online:-( That's why I made a few of them myself for MUCH cheaper plus TWICE bigger! So, here's how you can make a great Christmas gift for your friends or for yourself to warm yourself up on those chilly winter nights:

You'll need the same ingredients that I used for the "classic" bubble bar recipe in my previous homemade bubble bar post with a few additions.

Here's what I used:

  • 1/3 Cup Corn Starch
  • 1/3 Cup Cream of Tartar
  • 1 Cup Baking Soda
  • 1 Cup SLSA (Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate)
  • 1/3 Cup - 1/2 cup Glycerin
  • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
  •  3 tablespoons Ground Ginger/ Ginger Powder (warms you up after a long cold winter day)
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon juice (gives some sharpness to the scent)
  • 10 drops or less Food Coloring - for orange color use combination of red and yellow. Plus ginger powder adds some brownish color as well.
  • Sugar sprinkles
  • Cinnamon sticks (I got a pack of 10 long sticks at a dollar store - quality is good enough for a non-edible project)
  • 1 Medical Mask
  • 2 Gloves
  • 1 Large Bowl

 Instructions:
Don't forget to use mask and gloves, cause you don't wanna inhale all the dust from dry ingredients or have them dry out your hands (and they will, I learned it the hard way;-)

Combine all the dry ingredients together, and then add glycerin and olive oil. Once you have it mixed very well, you should have a dough-like consistency. Add some more glycerin, if necessary. Then divide it into two parts. Add ginger powder and food coloring to one, and lemon juice - to the other. The colored part will be the base of the house, and the white one will be the roof. Use cinnamon sticks as chimneys, and put some sprinkles on top.
P.S. Ironically, once I was done with the project I went to check my mail, and found this newspaper in the mailbox. What a coincidence!

  4. Hah, those look great. The chimneys are really a nice touch. Anything that's yummy and saves money is a win :D I always wonder though if these are time consuming to do. Maybe they're quicker and more fun to make with a partner :0)

  9. I must check out the LUSH site for their Christmas collection. I got excited when you mentioned that. I have a new love for LUSH ever since I first visited the store last month. Even more exciting is that you came up with an AMAZING homemade dupe, which only costs $1. That's a excellent deal. The bars you made are very adorable. I'm pretty sure you had fun making them too. :)
