DIY Anti-Cellulite Latte Serum Recipe (Lotion with Coffee & Coconut Oil) + Homemade Sugar Coffee Bar Scrubs

It's yet again that time of the year, ladies, when our cellulite anxiety starts to kick in;-) And while it's obvious that the main tools to use in anyone's anti-cellulite fight are healthy nutrition, plenty of water and exercising, I thought I'd share with you some extra "tricks" that help me A LOT: my homemade coffee anti-cellulite serum and sugar coffee scrubs...
This is the anti-cellulite routine I'm currently following on a weekly basis (trying to make it daily - fingers crossed!;-)

1. Yummy Coffee Sugar Scrubbing:

I LOVE having scrubs in bars like that for two reasons
  • First of all, your sugar and coffee doesn't fall down the moment you apply them on your skin and you can easily scrub the bar all over your thighs.
  • Secondly, when we make regular non-bar scrubs we have to put a lot of oil to hold ingredients together and that oil then ends up in the bath tub making the tub slippery and really hazardous! (although these bar scrubs also make the tub a bit slippery - yet much less)
So, scrub bars are DEFINITELY the way to go, especially since they are super easy to make.

INGREDIENTS (updated - even better and yummier!;-):
  • 1 cup Ground Coffee - unflavored! - coffee stimulates the blood to circulate more to the area where you apply it, helps pull out toxins and fatty deposits.
  • 1 cup Sugar - I use Morena Pure Cane Sugar, since it's neither too coarse nor too fine - great to stimulate the skin.
  • 4 tbsp Ground Cinnamon - improves blood circulation, accelerates cell metabolism - it makes my scrubs smell SO MUCH yummier
  • 2 tbsp Baking Soda - perfect for exfoliation
  • 2 tbsp Corn Starch
  • 2 tbsp Cocoa Butter - great moisturizer plus it adds a chocolate scent to the scrubs;-)
    WHAT I DO:
Mix together all the dry ingredients (coffee, sugar, cinnamon, baking soda and corn starch). Then put cocoa butter in a small pan. Take a frying pan, pour some water in it, put it on the stove on medium heat and then place your pan with butter into the frying pan so that it melts and becomes liquid. Once it’s melted, mix it very well with the dry ingredients. Then take a spray bottle, pour just a little bit of water and spritz your mixture to make it slightly damp. Then put into your molds - I used cupcake molds (I also put a few coffee beans at the bottom, and if you decide to use coffee beans also, plz don't forget to use a drain hair stopper in the tub). To prevent them from sticking to the molds I rubbed some cocoa butter cream left overs from the pan onto the surface of the molds - definitely helps.
I then left  the scrubs to dry in the molds overnight. After popping them out of the molds I let them sit for a few more hours with their coffee bean bottom up to let it dry completely. And then I store the scrubs in those reusable one-dollar Starbucks cups -very convenient and easy to hide my sugar bars, so that nobody tries to eat them, cuz they look and smell super tempting;-)

    2. Anti-Cellulite Latte Serum Conditioning:

After I scrub all the dead cells off, it is now perfect time to apply my homemade anti-cellulite serum. Coffee in it stimulates blood flow and reduces the appearance of cellulite as well as smoothes and tones the skin. And I use coconut oil in my serum because it is believed to be one of the best oils for fighting cellulite naturally. And I always apply serum with my mesh sponge. I do it for three reasons:
    1) mesh sponges provide a so-called "mechanical" exfoliation which then ensures better performance of coffee and coconut oil on my "problem" areas.
    2) such sponges massage skin very nicely which is extremely helpful in fighting cellulite.
    3) they look just like whipped cream on my "latte" serum and that's why I store them together in a coffee cup;-)

    WHAT I USE:
    • 2/3 cup Ground Coffee - again, unflavored!
    • 1.5 cup Coconut Oil

    WHAT I DO:
    Melting the Coconut Oil
I do the same thing with the coconut oil that I do with cocoa butter cream while making scrubs above, which is:
I put coconut oil in a small pan. Then take a frying pan, pour some water in it, put it on the stove on medium heat and  place the pan with oil into the frying pan so that the oil melts and becomes liquid. THEN I add my coffee to it and leave in the pan over boiling water for about 1-1.5 minutes. After that I put this coffee oil mixture into blender, blend for about 30 seconds, let it cool slightly so that it's not too hot and then strain the mixture with a cheesecloth to remove coffee grinds. I usually then put the serum into the fridge for 10-15 minutes to make it cool down and harden quicker. Its consistency gets back to the one of coconut oil, which is pretty much like non-refrigerated butter.

And this is my fun and yummy anti-cellulite routine;-)

  2. I love this idea! I've been making coffee scrubs for a year or two now and I love them! I've made them for all of my family, and they all love it as well! I can't wait to make this, cuz like you said, the regular scrubs can be such a pain to work with. I was wondering if you've tried using essential oils in this, like Grapefruit, Geranium, and Peppermint? The Grapefruit and Geranium oils have properties that help fight cellulite and spider veins and the peppermint just smells fantastic lol. The scrub I've been making also has ground cinnamon in it to give it that nice freshly brews cup of coffee scent. I can't wait to make your recipe, though. It looks utterly amazing! <3

  14. Does each scrub bar only last one shower?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Mine usually last me more than two showers - but it all depends on how much you scrub. you can use up one each time, or you can have one last you three showers (that's how I tend to use them) I hope that helps:-)))

  15. Do you have before and after pictures? It sounds like it would smell good and be great for exfoliating/moisture, but does it really work for cellulite? Just curious :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sorry, I didn't take before/ after pictures:-( It does help as an addition, but neither scrub nor serum can be used as the ONLY tool against cellulite. As I mentioned in the post we should primarily focus on healthy nutrition, drinking plenty of water and exercising. Everything else is just an aid, but NOT the only way to get rid of cellulite. But scrub and serum can definitely be great addition to your anti-cellulite routine;-)

I was wondering how many bars did you make with the recipe?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, Mona! Sorry I missed your comment:-( This recipe will make 5-6 bars depending on how big you make them. And then they will last you 2-3 showers each depending again on the size. I hope that helps, Mona! And again, sorry I missed your comment:-(

  20. Hi Maria, looks yummy! a couple of questions...if you apply serum with a mesh sponge, do you then rinse it off? also do you have an idea of shelf life?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't rinse it off, I usually just let it get absorbed... but it does color your skin, so I'd use it only if I had time to let it dry.... hope that helps;-))) As for the shelf life - I can't give an exact number, but there's no water in the serum, so it shouldn't mold - mine has been sitting in the bathroom for three months now and it looks absolutely fine!

  24. Maria, I love the recipe idea! Could I use coconut oil instead of cocoa butter for the scrub bar or is using the cocos butter crucial? I have lots of coconut oil art home, That is why I ask. :) Also, what sort of cocoa butter is it? Raw?

    1. Hi! Norma was very kind to share her experience with coconut oil below - I think that might answer your question;-)) And yes, I use raw organic cocoa butter.

  26. I too would love to know if we can use other oil instead of cocoa butter. I have the oils but not the cocoa butter. If anyone knows, please let me know and thank you so much Maria. I am making the fizz and the coffee bars.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Norma! You can try to add other oil, I like cocoa butter because it hardens once it cools down. But you can definitely try and use some other oil also.

      Delete
  27. Hi Maria,

I tried it with coconut oil and it worked for me! I think cocoa butter might make it stronger (I have to be somewhat gentle when rubbing). If you had both, I would suggest (from my limited experience) the cocoa butter rather than the coconut oil. But if you are desperate to try it and only have coconut oil, give it a whirl, but perhaps give it a longer drying time.

    1. Oh, thank you SO SO much for sharing your experience with us, Jenn! I totally agree that butter makes scrubs much easier to use, yet it's sometimes harder to find, so I appreciate you tested coconut oil for us and let us know it can also be used as an alternative! Have a great weekend, Jenn!

If you are going laser hair removal therapy then it is not necessary to use shave or wax prior this technique but yes your skin should be clean from dust as this technique effectively works on clean skin. Recently I got the laser hair removal therapy and I am very much pleased with the services. cellulite in Houston.

  30. Hello! I am curious....When you apply your serum, you are doing this after showering, with the loofah/mesh sponge, correct? Do you further rub in with your hands? Thanks!

  31. Hi there,
Can you store up coffee grounds so you can make this is big batches. If so would I just refrigerate?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I was wondering why you wouldn't use flavored coffee? Will it not dry or hold together very well?

    ReplyDelete
  33. So, do you store the serum in something besides the cute Starbucks cups or how would you recommend packaging it for a gift? I bought the adorable Starbucks cup but am not sure how to put the serum in since we are in Florida and many times coconut oil is melted at room temperature.

    1. You don't have to use raw cocoa butter mine was refined naturally just means there's no smell to it, just don't go using the already processed lotions, pure cocoa butter, raw or not is the way to go :-D

  40. I really don't understand what I'm missing.... I just tried to make scrub bars but I think that there's not enough wet ingredients? Just 2Tbs of cocoa butter? That's all? I spritzed, don't know how many times, with water and I'll see tomorrow if the bars are useable but at this moment I don't have much faith :(

  41. I have noticed that in colder months it takes longer for my scrub bars or lotion bars to completely set. They will be loose when you pack into the molds and it may not be firm the next day. Once I needed to wait 3 days for a bath bomb to be solid. Even if they do not set, they are still usable. You would just scoop a handful out of a jar instead of having a neat little bundle to go the shower.
That said, I tried this recipe and it is wonderful. Thank you for the coffee idea. You inspired me to try to blend a coffee oil for other beauty projects. :)

  42. My bars didn't dry up after 3 days....what's the problem you think...any advise...

    ReplyDelete
  43. are you using a large muffin pan or smaller muffins....my scrub bars did not harden after three days either...I might have put to much water...it was a little more than damp...not much more but I say a little more damp...could that have been the problem....thanks for any advise...I really like the idea of scrub bars...its less messy...xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  44. Just fyi, I made this recipe but altered it a little bit so the "bar" would be more solid.

I doubled the amount of cocoa butter and I added the same amount of shea butter. So I used a total of 4tbs cocoa butter and 4 tbs of shea butter. I also used 2 tbs of beeswax. I only had to keep them in the fridge for a couple of hours before they were fully hardened. I used one in the shower and it although pieces of it definitely break off, I still had a solid piece when I was done that I could use next time. I find that the extra cocoa and shea butter makes it more moisturizing. It was good, but a little bit messy!
