Ingredients:
Instructions:
- 1 Cup Baking Soda
- 1 Tablespoon Moisturizing Oil (I use Olive Oil)
- 1/3 Cup Corn Starch
- 1/3 Cup Cream of Tartar
- 1 Cup SLSA (Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate)
- 1/3 Cup - 1/2 cup Glycerin
- a few drops Fragrance or Essential Oil
- 10 drops or less Food Coloring
Also:
- Medical Mask - you can also find those at a Dollar Store
- Gloves
Instructions:
Don't forget to use mask and gloves, cause you don't wanna inhale all
the dust from dry ingredients or have them dry out your hands (and they will, I learned it the hard way;-)
Combine all the dry ingredients together, and then add glycerin, olive oil and fragrance/ essential oil. Once you have it mixed very well, you should have a dough-like consistency. Add some more glycerin, if necessary. Then divide it into two parts. Add different food coloring to each of the parts and mix until the color is consistent in each part (you can also keep the second part white).

To show you how to roll two parts together to make the bars I included the video by Bonnie at an amazing youtube channel GoodEarthSpa - she starts rolling @11.15min.

DeleteCan SLSA (Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate) be bought in a store?
ReplyDeleteI honestly have never seen it in stores. I think it's not something pple buy often, so brick and mortar stores don't really bother having SLSA in stock... But I might be wrong - sorry, I wish I could help more:-(
DeleteHow long do you let them dry?
ReplyDeleteIt usually 1.5-2wks for them to completely dry and harden (make sure no one eats them during that time, cuz I had a few guests who thought they were deliciously looking cookies;-) but if you make them for yourself - u can use them right after u make them.
DeleteOr package them in air tight containers for foaming bubble dough for kids to play with.
DeleteHave you ever used a lush fragrance oil dupe? I am wondering where I can find their scents.
ReplyDeleteI made this today, it's awesome! Can't wait to use it.
ReplyDeleteOh, that's amazing! I'm so incredibly sorry I somehow missed your previous comment:-( I've just noticed it now that you commented the second time here... as for their fragrance oils - they sometimes just put "perfume" in their ingredients and that most likely means there's some synthetic perfume added which will not be possibly duplicate, because of all the formulas and etc.
DeleteAnd I honestly would LOVE to see the pictures of your bubble bars - I always get unbelievably excited when people tell me on Facebook or Twitter that they made any of the LUSH DYs and they show me their pics;-)))
I'm so glad I found your blog through Pintrest! I LOVE Lush products but can't always afford to splurge on them. I made my first batch of Bubble Bars last night and they turned out GREAT (and I'm not a crafty person by any means!) I can't wait to try them out in the bath...hoping I can start giving them as gifts to teachers and friends at the holidays!!
ReplyDeleteOMG, thank you so much for stopping by to leave a comment, Emily! it just made me so unbelievably happy;-) I would LOVE to see the pictures of your bars, it's super exciting to know that my recipes help people save some money while enjoying the luxuries we deserve!!! and yes, they make really cute inexpensive gifts, that are still kinda untraditional, because you don't see too many people giving homemade lush products as gifts yet;-)
DeleteAgain, thank you for your sweet comment, Emily:-)) Please let me know if you try some other DIY LUSH products♥♥♥
Since the Bubble Bars turned out so great, I just ordered the Citric Acid so I can try the Bath Bombs next. I'm so excited!! Sure, I can send you a picture of the Bubble Bars, just not sure how!! :) I made them pastel purple with light blue swirls -- they are perfect for Easter! Thanks again for sharing your recipes!!!
DeleteAhh, this is so exciting! can't wait to hear how your "bombing" goes;-))) Just make sure that you don't spritz too much water on them so that citric acid doesn't fizz away while you're making the bombs - the mistake I made during my first time:-(
DeleteOMG, "pastel purple with light blue swirls"?! I NEED to see this! Emily can you facebook or tweet them to me?

Thank you! You just made my day again♥♥♥
I messaged you a photo through FB -- I think it probably went to your "other" folder in your inbox. Can't wait to try more of your recipes!! :)
DeleteEmily, you're amazing! people like you make my blogging experience so much more fulfilling♥♥♥ Seeing your pictures this morning was the best way to start a weekend I could ever ask for;-))))
DeleteThank you!
Do these keep bubbling like the lush ones do? Just curious
ReplyDeleteOh, they definitely do! Thank you for stopping by;-)
DeleteJust came back on here to get the bubble bar recipe again (making some for my sister's bday) and saw your post about getting the letter and being banned from using the store's name. RIDICULOUS!! What a hassle for you to have to change everything on your website! I'm still a fan, no matter what you have to call your "copy" products!!!
ReplyDeleteOMG, Emily! Thank you so incredibly much for the support - your comment is the best thing I could start this week with;-)) And please say Happy Birthday to your sister from me! I bet she deserves her spa time;-))))
Deletewhere do you buy sodium laureth sulfacetate?
ReplyDeleteHi! I buy it on Amazon. If you click on SLSA in my ingredients list, you'll get to the product page itself. Hope that helps and happy DIYing;-))
DeleteHi, Love your thrifty ideas!!! My question is the essential oils you use in you bubble bars. Do you use scents similar to(L)? What oils do you use and where do you get them? I'm not good at mixing scents etc and would love to be able to make these with the (L) scents..Thanks so much keep up the great work..Sherrie
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you so much Sherrie! I actually just use the oils that I feel like using, because L. doesn't disclose what perfumes they put when they say "perfume" on the ingredients list (I don't even know what they mean by "perfume" - whether they use essential oils or something chemical:-( I was told at their store that they do this to avoid having their formulas "stolen". I'm sorry, Sherie, I wish I could help more with that:-(
DeleteMaria - what can I sub out to make this more moisturising with butters and oils?
ReplyDeleteSherrie - go to Bramble Berry or Natures Garden to find US based fragrance suppliers.
CJ
Oh, I've just recently done a post about Bubble Melts - it's like bubble bar + bath melt + bath bomb in one. the recipe is here:
Deletehttp://www.mariasself.com/2013/05/how-to-make-diy-bubble-salts-fizzy_18.html
but if you don't want it to have salts and fizziness, just don't use oatmeal, sea salt and citric acid. Hope that helps;-)))
Have you tried making them without the Cream of Tartar? I'm just curious as to what purpose it serves and if the recipe really needs it.
ReplyDeleteThis is going on my Christmas list! That is, Christmas gifts to MAKE! Thanks so much for the recipe and pictures.
ReplyDeleteHelp! I love your blog and it has inspired me to try my hand at these lovely bath products I seem addicted to! I tried making the bubble bars per the above recipe however, how long do they need to dry for? I left mine sitting out over night and they are still soft as play dough! Any suggestions?? Thank you! And please continue to assist us poor Lush addicts with DIY solutions!!!
ReplyDeleteSarah
Add more cream of tartar to harden them up.
DeleteAbout Baking Soda can I chang Baking power?
ReplyDeleteI made these last week, and they still aren't dry, and now some of them are getting moldy. Is it from the large amount of glycerin used? They make wonderful bubbles!! I am so disappointed. I have them drying in the oven on warm to see if I can speed up the drying process before they all get moldy.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to also ask, in your video you add Tapioca Starch, but it isn't listed on your recipe. How much did you add, and what is the purpose of this.
ReplyDeleteThis would be good if SLSA (Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate) was easy to get - i know you put a link to an amazon site where you can buy it.. i had my credit card out and ready ... and they dont ship to australia.
ReplyDeletedespite the whispers australians enjoy baths too and dont wait until it rains for a shower.
I made some of your bubble bath bars, the bubbles were fabulous! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYour video shows a tapioca starch but the ingredients list does not. Can you tell me how much of this you use?
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if I should buy more then a 1 oz bottle of oil.
ReplyDeleteHow many drops should I get out of 1 oz?
DeleteHello, I used your bubble bar recipe and it looked great and made tons of bubbles. The only thing is the scent disappeared immediately when added to the water and was replaced by a play dough like smell. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Or anything I can do to fix this? Any help would be much appreciated!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dee
hi,
ReplyDeleteI tried to make it the way but there are no bubbles in my bar.I used disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate powder instead of SLSA as i didnt get one here in UK.
Please help
I have run into similar problems using SLSa in other recipes. I just had to add more of the foaming agent and sometimes depending on humidity levels less liquid and more hardening agents.
DeleteHave you ever used castor oil and tapioca starch? If you have how dose it compare? I have tapioca starch on hand and castor on the way.
ReplyDeleteOK, so I made these tonight and the dough came out like a soft marshmallow fluff. Is that the texture to look for?

ReplyDeleteI figured it out. After attempting to dry them in the oven and had a big pillowy mess I added more cream of tartar. Within the hour they were drying nicely and holding their shape.
